 Sports News 5/7/16

This week in sports news, baseball, basketball, and hockey are all surging right now. In baseball, the Cubs are the best team in the league, shooting off to a 22-6 start to the young year. Ben Zobrist has been the headline of the MLB right now by hitting 6 home runs in the last 5 games. He, for sure, has a hot bat right now and has no intentions of stopping. Giancarlo Stanton also is at the front of the pack after hitting his 11th home run of the season on Thursday. He hit an amazing 490 foot shot in Miami, which has been his stomping grounds this year at the plate. He has hit 5 home runs at his home stadium this year, including the absolute bomb he hit the other night.
NBA playoffs are buzzing right now with the Cavaliers getting ready to close up shop in Atlanta by winning 4 straight in the series. They haven't lost a game yet in the playoffs, and probably won't until they get to the finals. The Warriors' star player, Steph Curry, has been sitting out most of the Western Semi-Finals with a sprained right knee. He was unlikely to play game 4 in Portland as of yesterday, but he should be ready to go in game 5.
That's all for this week in sports news, see you later!

Sports News 4/30/16

A lot happened this week in the great world of sports. NBA Playoffs have started off with the Spurs, Thunder, Cavs, and Warriors all winning their respective series. There is a few teams left that have to play a Game 7 tonight. Also in NBA news, Golden State Warriors assistant coach Luke Walton agreed to be the Los Angeles Lakers new head coach. Walton had to take over the Warriors at the beginning of the season while Steve Kerr, the head coach, was out for back surgery. He led the Warriors to a 39-4 start to the season. He will hopefully bring the Lakers out of the hole they've been in the last two years, after coming off the worst two seasons in program history.
College baseball is in the heat of the season, with Florida and Texas A&M topping off the NCAA. Earlier today, however, Texas A&M was knocked off by Arkansas, who lit up the amazing Aggie pitching staff. In that game, 5 of the 14 runs in total were from home runs, two homers from A&M and one from the Razorbacks.
So that will do it for this week in sports news. So exciting every time, huh?

This week in sports news, the MLB season began and some rookies have been lighting up in the spotlight. By far the most impressive of them all is the Colorado Rockies player Trevor Story. This kid has certainly been making a "story" for himself. He has been absolutely lighting it up at the plate this season, hitting 6 home runs in his first 4 career games. It makes it even better that he is only playing right now because Jose Reyes is injured and cannot play for a few weeks. After this amazing debut of his slugging ability, he may just find a permanent spot on the Rockies roster this year. Also in the news, NBA Playoffs start soon, with the Warriors and the Cavaliers sitting at the top of their respective conferences. The Warriors are still chasing the crazy 73-win season, beating out the '95-'96 Chicago Bulls for the most wins in the regular season. The Warriors are very likely to reach the 72 wins the Bulls had 20 years ago, but the chance of getting 73 is slimming since they have to win their last 4 games to get to the 73-9 record they need. That'll wrap up sports for this week. I'll see y'all next week.

Sports News 3/5/16

This week in sports news, the NCAA will start March Madness in 8 days, which is very exciting for any college basketball fan. The top four seeds this includes the following: North Carolina, Villanova, Kansas, and Virginia. As a surprise to a lot of people, teams like Michigan State and Oklahoma are 2 seeds, even though Michigan State is number 2 in the nation as of right now. Also, Oklahoma is ranked 6 in the nation, higher than North Carolina is. In my opinion, I think that the top 4 in the tournament should be the following: Kansas, Villanova, Michigan State, and Oklahoma. I have it with those 4 because these teams have excelled all year at winning games and pulling out clutch wins. Although they've all had some rough losses, like an undefeated Kansas losing to a 3-5 Texas in December, they have showed that they deserve to be the top in their brackets. I am looking forward to this year's tournament because there will be so many upsets and everyone loves to see the underdog win. Out of the 4 that are currently number 1, I think that North Carolina would be the one to be on upset alert. This is because they are a very poor 3-point shooting team, with only a 28% shooting percentage. But since they are the nation's best team with scoring inside the three line, I think they could avoid the upset in the early rounds when they play the lower seeds. So that'll do it for this week's news in the sports world. Zach Wandrey, signing off for now!

Sports News 2/27/16

This week in sports news, the NFL Combine is coming up, MLB Spring Training will be kicking off in a few days, and the college basketball regular season is coming to a close as March Madness sneaks up on us.
The NFL Combine is happening soon, which gives the amazing college football players a place to shine and show all the NFL teams to give them a chance to make millions. Some standout players that will be in this year's Combine includes Derrick Henry, Ezekiel Elliott, and Derek Watt, the Texans' JJ Watt's younger brother.
MLB Spring Training will start soon. Everyone expecting the Chicago Cubs to shine above all others because of the really nice trades they picked up this offseason, including Jason Heyward and John Lackey from the Cardinals, and Ben Zobrist from the Cleveland Indians. The Cubs are expected to win at least 100 games this season out of the 162 they will play in the regular season, and they are string favorites to win the World Series.
As the NCAA basketball season comes to an end, Villanova still sits on the throne as number one, closely followed by Kansas and Virginia. March Madness is sneaking up, which means upsets are begging to happen as the tournament kicks off very soon. Expect to see many top teams get booted out by some very good lower seeded teams.

Sports News 2/13/16

This has been a crazy week in sports, with news from the Super Bowl, to trade talks in the NBA, to crazy things happening in college hoops. It's been an interesting week, to say the least .
In NFL news, the Denver Broncos came out victors in the 50th Super Bowl. Their high-powered defense struck down on Carolina's top offense by having 6 sacks on Cam Newton and forcing 4 fumbles. Denver's Von Miller got the MVP for the game by showing an amazing performance on the defensive side of the ball. He was the first defensive player to win the MVP since Ray Lewis did back in 2001 with the Baltimore Ravens.
Crazy trade rumors have been circling around the NBA, talking about high-caliber players like Kobe, Carmelo Anthony, and Kevin Durant. Most of these rumors are definitely false, like Carmelo's and Kobe's, but KD hasn't turned down the rumor of him maybe going to the Golden State Warriors. Curiosity has also been peaked with this because word says that the Warriors have the money to sign on Durant, with a cap room of around $180 million. This is sad to hear though, coming from an avid Oklahoma City fan.
College hoops: upsets around every corner. Starting with North Carolina, arguably the best team in the NCAA, has lost 2 in the last 4 games, putting them down from 2nd to 9th in the AP Poll. Villanova is sitting on the throne of number 1, being the only team to have 1 loss this season. It's kinda surprising to see them on top again after struggling to make it big in the Big East Conference
That's all for me for this week in sports news. I'll see you next week *wink*.

Sports news 2/6/16

2/6/16 Sports

So the Super Bowl is tomorrow, and everyone in the country will more than likely watch it. The Panthers and the Broncos, the two most explosive teams in the NFL, will go head-to-head to see who will take home the Lombardi Trophy. The Panthers are the favorite to win the game, with the odds slightly in their favor. Although Cam Newton has had a crazy amazing year by being responsible for over 50 touchdowns, he is going against the top defense in the AFC, averaging four sacks a game. Although, Newton has already taken that defense down by beating them earlier in the year. Peyton Manning isn't going to let the Panthers stomp over them after what happened in the last Super Bowl they were in, when they lost to the Seahawks by 41 points. Peyton and the Broncos have an extensive staff of many all-star quality players on both sides of the ball. Manning can easily take care of the Panthers' amazing defensive backs because he is one of the best quarterbacks to play the game. All around, this will be the closest Super Bowl stat-wise since the Steelers played the Cardinals back in 2010. In my personal opinion, the Panthers will win because the Broncos just won't be able to keep up with the best offense and defense in the NFL. It's going to be an exciting time to see the 24 year old Cam Newton holding up the trophy, or even seeing Peyton holding the trophy after his last game in the NFL.

Sports News 1/30/16

This week in sports news, Super Bowl 50 is just a week away, the X Games kicked off on Friday, and NBA hoops got a bit heated. With the Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos preparing to play in the big game, everyone is getting hyped up about the biggest time in the NFL season. This game has been in every conversation in the NFL world for weeks.
In the X Games, there has been a few events completed, like Men's Snowboarding and Ski Freestyle. Most events were ended early this weekend because of all of the snow that Aspen has had.
In the NBA, the Golden State Warriors almost lost Saturday night and the Cavs barely beat the Spurs.

Sports News 1/16/16

This week in sports news, NFL has kicked off into the playoffs, NBA had some huge upsets, and the NFL draft talk is consuming the college football world.
First off in the NFL, playoffs have started off with some big wins. The Patriots won in a close battle with the Kansas City Chiefs. The final score was 27-20. In the NFC, the Packers and the Cardinals had a crazy battle on Saturday, with a crazy overtime  upset win by the Cardinals, 26-20.
Switching to the NBA, there were some big upsets this week. The best team right now, the Golden State Warriors, were upset by the Detroit Pistons. The final score was surprisingly large, with the
Pistons having 113 and the Warriors having only 95. This was very surprising because the Warriors' captain Steph Curry had a pretty good night on the offensive side with 31 points, which is pretty average for the high-caliber weapon of that team.
Now to the NFL draft. The College Football world has been overrun with talk of who is going to the NFL. Big names like Ezekiel Elliot from Ohio State, DeSaun Watson from Clemson, and Derrick Henry from Alabama are all going to be quick selections in the Draft coming in April.

Sports News 1/9/16

This week in sports has been jam-packed with College Playoff games, NFL teams making it to the playoffs, NBA rookies showing their stuff, and much more.
In college football, Clemson and Alabama will face off in the National Championship game on January 11th. Clemson routed Oklahoma to punch their ticket, and Alabama took care of Michigan St. in their semifinal game. Granted, both teams were unanimously the favorites to win their respective games, but no one was ready for the pounding Michigan State received from the Crimson Tide. Michigan State had just beat one of the best teams in the country, rank #3 Ohio State, to earn the #3 spot in the Playoffs. But as soon as kickoff started, the Spartans weren't ready for the Tide. Alabama took care of their business and whipped the Spartans 38-0 for their chance to play for the National Championship.
The NFL has started to get their playoff teams set also. The top teams this year are Carolina, New England, Cincinnati, Minnesota, Denver, Washington, Arizona, and Houston. These teams, along with the two wild cards in each conference, have made it to the playoffs. Pretty exciting, right?
In NBA news, some rookies have been showing what they are made of this year, including Lakers guard D'Angelo Russel. He scored a career high 27 points in their tough loss against the Sacramento Kings on Thursday. After a few and-one plays, he showed some swag by dancing and doing the "Hotline Bling".
